The boat show usually takes place over nine days in December, but the show shifted to January this year in the hopes of attracting more buyers. The show is only being held for five days this time around, so the pressure is on to sell.

An interesting tidbit – 76 percent of the boats out there are owned by families with a household income under $100,000. So while you might think of boating as an activity for the wealthy, it is more affordable than that.

Tickets are $12 for adults. Kids 15 and under are free.

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Parts along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is an update from the Greater Philadelphia Boat Show.

Despite the weak economy, boat dealers are hoping to lure customers with discounted prices this weekend at the Greater Philadelphia Boat Show in Oaks, Pa.

One of the higher end boats at the show a 30′ Bayliner 300 cruiser.

Gary Wimmer of Highway Marine Services in Quakertown, Pa. took  me for on a tour.  It  has two engines,  sleeps four comfortably inside the cabin, and has a galley area, a shower, even a flat screen TV.

He says if you’re in the market for a boat, there a great deals to be had:

“The boat normally sells for $133,000, and with the extra discounts that we are giving at the show along with a promotion from the factory — it’s worth about $6,000 on that boat — it gets the boat down to $108,000.”

And there’s even entertainment.  You can meet Twiggy, the waterskiing squirrel. Lou Ann Best (above) is Twiggy’s trainer.  She says a remote-controlled speedboat pulls the squirrel in a pool whose water is heated to 85 degrees:

The Baltimore Sun reports on this yearâ??s Baltimore Boat Show and trend towards â??green boatingâ??, offering products and tips to make boating more environmentally friendly.

According to the Baltimore Sun story, this year’s show featured a “Green Boating Zone” featuring hybrid boats, biodegradable soaps, and electric outboard engines. Show promoters also offered tips on green boating ranging from recycling batteries to preventing fuel spills.

What is behind the trend to make boating greener? One reason could be the tough economy. Environmentally friendly practices could help broaden the appeal of boating to new customers.
