PORT ORCHARD — An 48-foot Bayliner yacht was destroyed by fire Tuesday morning at the Sinclair Inlet Marina, according to police and fire officials.

Crews were called to the 500 block of Bay Street at about 7:45 a.m. and found the boat on fire. Others at the marina had smelled the fire and called 911.

Kitsap County Deputy Fire Marshal Greg Hanson, on his way to work, saw smoke from the top of the hill and was the first to reach the scene, Fire Marshal David Lynam said. South Kitsap Fire and Rescue crews soon followed.

Crews couldn’t get the marina’s standpipe, which provides water for firefighting, to work. So a Port Orchard police officer invited two firefighters aboard the department’s 31-foot police boat and they towed the burning boat away from the marina, Police Chief Al Townsend said. Marina officials said the standpipe was being repaired, Lynam said.

The boat had been tied alongside the covered marina. It was moved a few hundred feet to the end of another pier, allowing firefighters to run their hoses to it from the street. Until then, the fire had been contained inside of the boat, but flames soon burst through the windows.

There were no injuries and no other boats or property was damaged. Lynam said hundreds of gallons of diesel were on board, but none leaked.

Lynam said the fire started in the pilot house from a failure of the boat’s electrical system.

The owner came from Seattle to check on the Bayliner Boat. A damage estimate hasn’t been completed, but the owner said the boat was worth about $250,000, Lynam said. Bayliner Boats – Bayliner Parts thanks; Boat Burns in Port Orchard Marina : South Kitsap : Kitsap Sun

Hi gang, Rick Ostler here from North American Waterway bringing you Bayliner Parts and Bayliner Boats along with news and views from the boating industry. Here is a news report out of Florida on Marine dealers in the Panhandle area.

Marine dealers in the Panhandle are reporting, for the second straight year, that boat sales are stuck in the doldrums. “It’s going to have its ups and downs, but this is the first down we’ve had where we didn’t know whether we were going to see the end,” said Darrell Robinson, owner of Harbor View Marine on Bayou Chico. “You’ve still got some scared people who don’t want to buy anything new.” Nationwide, boat sales are down 40 percent from last year, and local boat dealers are feeling the crunch.

Robinson said some boat manufacturers are offering deep discounts to help drive sales. The price of admission can be high, but the discounts are significant — as much as $40,000 off a $200,000 Bayliner Boat Crusier.

Jack Wills, owner of Wills Marine of Pensacola on Barrancas Avenue in Pensacola, said that in a good year, they’ll sell about 20 boats. Boat sales account for about 25 percent of their profit, Wills said, but so far this year, they haven’t sold a single one. At least two local marine dealers have gone out of business in recent months, including Doc’s Marine on Pine Forest Road, and Northwest Florida Marine on Pensacola Boulevard.

The busy season for boaters runs from late February through October, and maintenance and parts departments at area marine dealers are seeing an uptick in business so far this year. “This year I see a lot more people using their boats.” For marine dealers, that means more people bringing boats in for maintenance and service. Wills said that parts and repair, which account for about 70 percent of his business, are up from this time last year, as people elect to repair old boats rather than buy new.

“It’s starting to turn around now and we’re seeing the light.” Wills said even though the economy is struggling, getting time on the water is a luxury many Panhandle residents aren’t willing to let go without a fight.

Campbell said he has deep-sea fished in the Gulf for years, but he sold his last boat seven or eight years ago, and was looking to buy a new one so he could get back into the hobby. Campbell said that, except for a few months when gas was over $4 a gallon, he’d been shopping for a boat for the last two years. Bayliner Boats-Bayliner Parts thanks; The Immediate Edge » Article Summarizer

Just like last year, Popsci.com’s excellent Best of What’s New 2008 edit package is rich with tech that might one day trickle up to yachting. For instance, couldn’t?a version of?the Lexus super wide-angle?integrated cameras seen above be useful in docking? How about a satellite able to…

Nudge forward out of a garage, and cameras mounted on the grille and under the passenger-side mirror on the 2008 Lexus LX57 see around the corners before you do, sparing pedestrians that cross your path. A second camera provides a view of the ground beside the vehicle, so you don’t scuff those new tires on the curb. The navigation screen can display both views simultaneously.

This would be awesome for your boat and trailer. Check out the video.
