Just in case I get stuck out in the middle of lake Erie with a dead battery

yes.you have to remove the cover. also check battery connections. its also a good idea to buy a portable type battery pack. they are low in cost and come with jumper cables and an outlet for cigarette type plugs. get one with enough amperage to start your bmotor.
