The brush replacement kit should still be available from Merc, part # F 15190. If not, Sierra Marine has replacement starters ( #18-5613) and brush kits (#18-5697). Make sure the rest of the starter is in good condition before replacing just the brushes. Have a good look at the windings for signs of burnt insulation, check that the starter pinion advances and returns smoothly, and that the bushings are not worn. Replacing the brushes is an easy task, you may have to make a "brush holder tool" out of a piece of sheet metal to help hold the brushes in place during assembly. He an supply brushes from bulk stock, If not exact fit, file down to smooth running fit in brusholder, adjust length as required to allow assembly and good operation. a brief but dirty job. cut off old brushes & solder new leads using fine pliers on the leads to stop the solder wicking up the leads and making them too stiff. use RESIN CORED solder only.<br><b>References : </b><br> visit auto electrician with armature & sample brush and estimate for needed length. if commutator worn he will turn it down in a lathe.
