My 1989 8hp Evinrude outboard telltale water drops off when you rev the motor up?

Have cleared the telltale line back to the cooling jacket – the motor starts and idles well – there is plenty of water flow at low idle but when you rev the motor up the water flow drops right off and some exhaust fumes come out the telltale – when you back the revs off the water flow returns – could it be the impellor or head gasket gone, letting the exhaust fumes back into the cooling jacket?

It is very possible that the impeller could pump ok at idle, but not pump enough at WOT. Sometimes the hub will spin inside the impeller just like they can in a prop. Before you tear into your engine try changing the water pump as a kit. New housing, wear plate, impeller, and gaskets. If that doesn't fix it try removing the thermostat, and run the engine momentarily with the t-stat cover off to verify water flow to the engine. That will tell you whether you need to go low or go high in your search.

Could be either, or the exhaust tube could have a small hole in it. Either way, it could damage your engine from overheating due to not enough coolant (water) flowing at higher speeds.

If you are getting exhaust in the water jacket, something is definitely wrong such as a head gasket or a crack somewhere.

Actually it sounds like you have 2 problems. If your impeller was good, your water pressure would pick up with rpms and overpower the exhaust leak.

My guess is a bad impeller has caused overheating, that resulted in a blown head gasket or a crack.

First take the thermostat out an inspect it . or replace it. there is a by pass hole that plugs in time an if the stat doesn't open than no water flow??Impeller next . If running good doubt if you have internal problems.

1st hope you are not running the engine on a pair of water ears cause reving up with running off of a water hose you will be buy a new outboard…… if you are running it in the water sound like a hole in the line or a cracked head gasket if it was the impeller no water would flow out but i would start with the tale tell ,line thermostat, impeller, and them the head gasket
