how much water is supposed to shoot out of the back of an outboard?
i have a 35 hp force outboard. i got it running today. i was told by the boat shop to make sure water was going through it before i took ot out on the lake. how much water is supposed to come out? is it a steady stream or just a spray?
good stream from the tell tale pipe (the small nozzle under thee cowling that you see water jet from) but, where you really want to see water is comming from the hub, if its thru hub exhaust, or exhaust ports. thats where the majority of your water will come out. the small nozzle is just a visual indication that water is being pumped.
how much is hard to say, on a 35, id expect to see a strong stream from the tell tale, and a steady spurt from the exhaust, that wont come out in a stream or anything, it will spray and spurt.
remember though, dont rev up your engine with it out of water, above 2000 rpm or so, unless you have it in a large testing tank.
muffs dont provide enough water for adequate cooling at high rpms, and its easy to over rev your engine with no resistance on the prop. put it in the water, as long as you have water comming fro that tell tale, your pumping.

stream.

its hard to say how much. how much is much?it should be basicly spraying out with the exaust. a good way to tell is there should be a lot more water than steam{very little steam}it should not be so hot that you cant let it spray on your hand for a second or two

the more the better as it is an indication of correct cooling for your motor, if ya go in saltwater you’ll need plugs hooked up to hose and run fresh water through to stop corrosion, also spray CRC on the motor under the cover up top to help keep water out and stop corrosion.

Depends on RPM and the condition of your Impellar in the Lower unit!!! It should be changed every 100hrs or yearly to prevent dry-rot!!

basically it need to look as if you was "hanging it over the side" just a steady stream out the back of the exit water port on the motor. a spray indicates it isnt picking up enough water.

Some times Dirt Dobbers Clog this out put. If, Water coming out weak run it some in the Lake and keep an eye on it, it should soon start to clear and have a good Stream, just like it drake Beer and take a pee. IF, it not get good remove the Cowling it a rubber hose Attached and Disconnect and see if any Debris come out, like Insect stuff, that what Dirt Dobbers put there and it could lodge and slow the stream. IF, you do not get a good Stream at higher RPM’s you may want to check the Impeller in the Lower Unit just to be safe. Put in forward gear and remove the Bolts and the Hex/Allen screw in the Anode (it the fin above the prop). The Impeller is in the Casing at the Bottom of the Drive Shaft.
