1973 Evinrude Outboard – Wire a Starter

Can anyone tell me how to wire the starter on a 1973, 25HP, Evinrude outboard motor?

It was my dads and I want to put on a starter but I need to know how to make it recharge the battery.I can hook up the starter with no problem.I just need to find the wires that charges the battery.

man, that guy snag is not only long winded but he no speakie english too good neither, huh?! you can put a starter on it, but a ’73 manual start is not going to have the AC coil to charge.

You can find the parts used easy enough. a decent battery will start that engine so many times you will lose count without recharging.

    You sure this Starter made to start and charge?
    Is it directly connected to the fly wheel with a belt? "OR" Does it throw the starter gear into the fly wheel gear to start?
    This what I know of this type starter. It works like a Generator/Starter "Not an Alternator".
    When the Solenoid clicks using your key to start, the Starter will engage an turn the engine to start. Just like a car. When you release the key (Like we do a car) the engine be running. The Starter is "Direct Connect (Usually with a small belt)". The direct connection allows the starter to keep spinning and it makes 12 Volts DC to charge the Battery (Not AC like an Alternator). It should have a Voltage Regulator to keep the 12 Volts steady and stop overcharging.
    Now is where I get shady on this as I have not seen a setup like this since the 70's and it was on a Riding Lawnmower. There are going to be about 3-4 wires that go to the Regulator and it should tell on the cover which wire do what.
    GND=Ground (negative on battery)
    Bat+=Positive on battery
    Bat – = Negative on battery
    GEN+ = Positive on Starter
    This the best I can tell you without seeing.
    But, if the Starter just goes into a Flywheel and then drops out when you release the key, it not a Generator. I will assume it may have a Stator under the Flywheel for charging, if not, you will need to buy all that stuff. I would really need to see what all it have. Well, this may not be an answer, but, maybe it help you understand the concept of the Generator/Starter.

    I thought of something!
    IF, it just a starter, it could get expensive to add the Charging System. Learn your options. You may be able to buy a Solar Charger that keep the battery charged if you not doing a lot of excessive starting. I remember seeing one that was fairly large at "Gander Mountain" a sporting goods store where I live, it was about $30. Bigger than those little on dash things they sell for cars.

    The 25hp does not have a charge coil for battery charging unless it is a sail drive than a plug in is next to the choke, But i doubt you have 1. So no charger<<>>You might be able to get a stator & charge coil check with omc an see not cheap. Can put a solar panel just don't start to many time with out charging or you will be yanking on it again>>
